It’s a constant challenge keeping on top of maintaining this fine old gem of a building. 400 years of Lakeland weather takes its toll! Most of our roof has now been re-slated, putting paid to the days of dashing round with buckets in every downpour, to catch the drips. We are always looking to upgrade the rooms and public areas, whilst keeping the character of the place intact. William Wordsworth, once our neighbour, would surely still recognise the historic interiors, whilst current visitors love the fine beers, fine food and fabulous staff.

The bluebells are out, the lambs are skipping in the fields and the sun is shining. It is just lovely in the Lakes now, and where better than sitting in our delightful garden with a pint listening to the chirping birds? The woodland floor is now carpeted in bluebells, which is such a pretty sight. The lambs are skipping in the fields and the weather is lovely and sunny. Its a joy to be alive! SUNDAY EVENING 24th April. We are CLOSED from 5pm until 12 noon on Monday 25th.

We are closed from 5pm on Tuesday, just for that evening, to give our overworked staff some much needed time off. Open as normal from 12 noon on Wednesday.

We are open every day through Christmas. 3 course Christmas Roast dinner on the 25th available for residents and non-residents (menu on the food page) Just a few rooms left now over Christmas and New Year, escape while you can! Up to 24th December: open every day for food and drink as normal. Christmas Day, Saturday 25th: Bar open 12pm–4pm, 6-9pm. Christmas Dinner 1-3pm, bookings essential. Christmas Day! Fires will be roaring and we will be open for drinks only from noon until around 9pm.......... if you feel the need for some fresh air or have over indulged..... we don't judge!
